Card Exipry Default Set to 5 Years
April 13, 2026
Cards
Card Expiry is now 5 years (default and maximum)
All clients
Impacts clients submitting an expiration greater than 5 years
Overview
Lithic's default card expiry is currently 6 years, which is higher than the industry standard of 4-5 years. This update will ensure keys and certificates expirations are better aligned with card expirations.
Starting April 13, 2026, Lithic will change the production default expiration to 5 years. This will also be the maximum expiry allowed.
As always, you can configure your expiry date to be less than 5 years using the Create Card API. If no value is provided in the API, we will default the expiry to 5 years starting April 13, 2026.
Details
- If you currently set your cards to expire in 5 years or less, nothing changes
- If you use our default expiry and do not send your own value in the API, your cards will begin to expire in 5 years instead of 6 years for any new cards ordered
- If you set the expiry date in the API to greater than 5 years, the API will return an error response
