New 3DS authentication_method value available in ASA

Overview

Starting April 1, 2025, a new authentication_method value will be available within the cardholder_authentication object in ASA requests. For 3DS authenticated transactions, this field indicates how the 3DS authentication was completed with one of three possible values:

  • FRICTIONLESS: Authentication completed without cardholder interaction
  • CHALLENGE: Authentication completed via cardholder challenge
  • NONE: No authentication performed

Important Considerations

  • This new field enables customers to identify when a cardholder has already completed a 3DS challenge, helping to avoid requesting additional challenges or step-ups during the ASA authorization flow.
  • This enhancement is purely additive and requires no action from existing integrations.
